What Is DigiLocker?

DigiLocker is a flagship initiative under the Digital India programme, designed to offer every Indian citizen a secure cloud-based platform to store, access, and share essential documents and certificates anytime, anywhere. It eliminates the need to carry physical documents by enabling access to verified digital versions.

Launched in July 2015, DigiLocker is operated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

Who Founded DigiLocker?

Though not founded by an individual entrepreneur, DigiLocker was conceptualized and developed by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under MeitY. It was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modiโ€™s vision to digitize governance and reduce dependency on paper documentation.

The technical and strategic planning behind DigiLocker was led by the Digital India team with inputs from bureaucrats, technocrats, and private tech consultants.
