Guhla Cheeka, April 10 – The Cheeka Mandi Commission Agents’ Association began a peaceful protest outside the Market Committee office this evening, demanding permission to offload wheat at nearby rice mills due to the rapidly increasing arrivals in the grain market.
The protest was led by Mandi President Karam Chand Garg, who addressed the media and expressed growing concerns over limited space in the local mandis. He warned that both mandi yards would be filled within a day or two, forcing farmers to dump their harvest in open, unprotected roadside areas. This not only risks crop damage but could also lead to traffic congestion.
Garg highlighted that several rice mills in Cheeka, including those owned or known to the traders, could safely store the incoming wheat and provide greater convenience for both traders and farmers compared to the mandi.
Former Mandi President Jaipal Garg, Raj Jakhauli, Kashmir Garg, Sunil Mittal, and hundreds of other traders were present in solidarity.
What the SDM Says:
Responding to the protest, SDM Guhla Captain Parmesh Singh cited written orders from the Deputy Commissioner of Kaithal, strictly prohibiting the dumping of wheat in any rice mill. He dismissed the claims of mandi space shortage, stating that the grain markets are currently underutilized and arrivals are still manageable.
However, the SDM added that if the situation worsens and the mandi space genuinely falls short due to high crop inflow, the matter will be raised with the Deputy Commissioner for reconsideration and appropriate action will be taken as per further instructions.
The traders and farmers are hoping for a swift and farmer-friendly resolution, urging the administration to prioritize crop safety and logistical ease over rigid protocols.
