Discovery of the Infant’s Body

On June 11, 2025, Gurjinder, the daughter of the accused woman, returned to her parental home in Guhla village. While near the familyโ€™s cattle shed, she noticed a blue school bag lying unattended. Upon opening it, she found the body of a newborn wrapped in a plastic bag, with a red cloth tied around its neck. The child appeared to be male. Distressed, Gurjinder immediately informed her mother, Phoolpati.

Phoolpati, upon seeing the body, alerted the local community and contacted the police. Authorities arrived at the scene promptly, and the infant’s body was sent for post-mortem examination.

Accusations Against the Pregnant Woman

Phoolpati accused her daughter-in-law, Poonam Devi, of being responsible for the infant’s death. She claimed that Poonam had been acting strangely since her son, Gurucharan Singh, moved to Portugal for work three years ago. Phoolpati alleged that Poonam had been frequently absent from home and had become increasingly reclusive.

Approximately six months prior, Phoolpati had moved back to her parental home due to alleged mistreatment by Poonam. Upon her return, she noticed that Poonam’s abdomen appeared swollen. When questioned, Poonam attributed the condition to water retention. Phoolpati suspected that Poonam was pregnant but did not confront her directly.

Phoolpati further implicated Poonam’s mother, Nani, and her aunt, Meena, in the alleged crime. She claimed that they were complicit in concealing the pregnancy and the subsequent birth of the child.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following the complaint, the Guhla police registered an FIR under sections 103(1), 238(a), and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code. Poonam Devi was detained for questioning, and a medical examination was conducted to ascertain her condition. She was later referred to the district hospital in Kaithal for further evaluation.

The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Authorities are examining potential motives, including domestic disputes and possible concealment of the pregnancy. The involvement of Poonam’s family members is also under scrutiny.

Community Reaction and Societal Implications

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Guhla village community. Residents are grappling with the gravity of the situation, and discussions about domestic relationships, trust, and secrecy have become prevalent. The case highlights the potential dangers of unresolved familial tensions and the importance of open communication within households.

Experts emphasize the need for societal support systems to address issues like domestic violence, mental health, and reproductive health. Community awareness programs and counseling services can play a crucial role in preventing such tragedies.
