UBDC Canal Strengthened After Flooding
Pathankot, August 28, 2025:
In response to recent floods caused by heavy rains in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, Punjab Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak inspected the installation of iron gates on the UBDC Canal at Gulpur Simbli village. The step aims to prevent further flooding in residential areas.

Flood Situation Eased After Heavy Rains
For over a week, much of Pathankot district had been affected by flood-like conditions. With improved weather, the administration has been able to intensify relief measures.
Cause of Flooding in Pathankot
Due to excess inflow into the Ranjit Sagar Dam, water was released into the Ravi River. The overflow at Madhopur breached barricades, forcing water into the UBDC Canal. This caused flooding in several villages when the canal overflowed into residential zones.
Villages Affected by Overflow
Minister Kataruchak explained that Gulpur Simbli, Bajigar Bhai community dwellings, Samrala, and Sukalgarh villages were among the worst affected. Locals reported that water had entered the canal after nearly 40 years, breaking old outlets and gates.
Installation of New Iron Gates
To control the situation, three new iron gates, each weighing 10–12 quintals and designed to last around 50 years, are being installed on the canal. The minister assured residents that the flow has now been controlled, and the villages will no longer face waterlogging from the canal.

Punjab Government Stands With People
Minister Kataruchak emphasized that the Punjab government is fully committed to public welfare and ensuring safety during natural calamities. He said, “The installation of these gates will bring relief to the affected villages. The government stands with its people in every crisis.”
Leaders Present at the Site
Along with the minister, local leaders including Pawan Kumar (Block President), Sandeep Kumar (Block President), Bhupinder Singh Kataruchak, and other party workers were present during the inspection.
