Police Support for Runaway Couples: A New Hope for Love and Safety

In a significant move to protect individual freedom, the Haryana government has made it easier for couples who marry by choice to seek safety. After a directive from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the state has issued a new notification through the Home Ministry. This order makes it clear: couples who fear for their safety after a consensual marriage can approach the nearest police station for protection. This step not only strengthens their rights but also reflects growing support for freedom in relationships.

New Guidelines to Protect Love Marriages

Police Will Act Fast on Protection Requests

According to DSP (Headquarters) Bir Bhan, the Kaithal police department has begun enforcing the courtโ€™s directions strictly. To make the process efficient, DSP Sushil Prakash, who handles crimes against women, has been made the nodal officer. At each police station, an officer of ASI rank will now be responsible for handling such cases.

If any adult couple marries with mutual consent but feels unsafe due to family or social pressure, they can approach the police. Officers will respond quickly. ASIs will listen to the entire matter, speak with the concerned parties, and aim to resolve the issue within three days.

Safe Houses and Legal Help for Threatened Couples

Couples Will Not Be Left Alone in Crisis

If a couple reports a threat, the police will offer them shelter in safe houses. These are special locations where they will be safe from harm. Here, they will also receive legal guidance. This move is designed to protect their right to life and liberty.

Importantly, if both partners are adults and their marriage is based on consent, the law gives them the right to protection. The police are committed to providing both safety and support in these situations.

Respecting Privacy and Mental Well-being

Police Will Guard Dignity Along with Safety

DSP Bir Bhan emphasized that couples will not face any mental or physical harassment. Officers will ensure complete confidentiality. This means the coupleโ€™s identity and situation will not be exposed.

Strict action will be taken against anyone who threatens or tries to harm them. All police stations have received orders to handle such situations with care and urgency. Officers have been asked to be sensitive and respectful while processing these requests.

Public Response: A Step Toward a Safer Society

Communities Slowly Embrace Personal Choice

This new policy comes at a time when young people across the country are increasingly choosing partners based on love, not arranged norms. However, many such couples still face threats, isolation, or even violence from their families and communities.

With this directive, many believe a safer environment is being created. It acknowledges that love is not a crimeโ€”and choosing oneโ€™s life partner should not invite danger.

Fast-Track Action: What Happens After a Couple Seeks Help?

  1. Visit to Police Station
The couple explains their situation to the officer on duty.
  2. Initial Complaint Registered
The ASI records the case and listens to both sides.
  3. Safe House Option
If needed, the couple is moved to a secure location.
  4. Legal Assistance
Police provide help with documents and legal support.
  5. Resolution Within Three Days
The complaint is addressed and resolved swiftly.

Law and Love: The Legal Perspective

Law Recognizes Adult Consent in Marriage

Under Indian law, any person over 18 (for women) and 21 (for men) can marry by their own choice. If both are adults and the relationship is consensual, then legal action cannot be taken against them for marriage.

This right to marry is protected under Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and liberty. This includes the freedom to choose oneโ€™s partner.

Encouragement From Police: A Shift in Mindset

Police Aim to Be Guardians, Not Barriers

This shift in policing shows a change in thinking. Earlier, couples often feared going to the police. Now, they can see police as allies. Officers have been trained to handle such cases with sensitivity and seriousness.

This not only strengthens the rule of law but also brings hope to those who are often left feeling helpless. The police are now helping young people stand by their choices.

Real-World Impact: Giving Power to the People

When Rights Are Protected, Fear Fades

This change is more than a policyโ€”itโ€™s a message. It tells people that their choices are valid, and their lives matter. Many young couples, especially from conservative backgrounds, are now seeing a safer future.

The message is simple: Love deserves protection. And the state is ready to provide it.

Conclusion: A New Chapter for Freedom in Love

The Haryana government’s steps to support love marriages mark a powerful moment for individual rights. With the police offering safety and respect, couples can now focus on building their lives without fear.

This isnโ€™t just about legal protection. Itโ€™s about giving people the power to love, live, and growโ€”without being punished for their choices.
