Door-to-Door Awareness to Curb Infant Deaths from Diarrhea in Kaithal

Kaithal, June 17 โ€“ In a determined move to reduce infant deaths caused by diarrhea, the Health Department in Kaithal has launched a Diarrhea Control Campaign that will continue until July 31. Civil Surgeon Dr. Renu Chawla informed that the initiative is focused on protecting children under five years of age through early prevention and treatment.

As part of the campaign, ASHA workers and ANMs are visiting households across the district to distribute ORS packets and educate parents on the importance of using ORS and Zinc during diarrhea episodes. These frontline health workers are also advising families on precautionary measures to prevent diarrhea.

Zinc and ORS Distribution for Early Care

Dr. Chawla emphasized that any child showing symptoms of diarrhea will be provided with Zinc tablets to aid recovery. The district has set up ORT (Oral Rehydration Therapy) centers at all primary health centers, sub-centers, and anganwadi centers.

Special health department teams are also visiting local schools to teach children proper handwashing techniques, a critical step in preventing infection.

Precautionary Tips for Parents

Dr. Chawla urged parents to adopt the following practices to protect their children:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Drink and use clean, safe drinking water.
  • Maintain clean surroundings and use toilets at all times.
  • Exclusively breastfeed infants for the first six months.
  • Ensure full vaccination, including for rotavirus and measles.
  • Provide adequate Vitamin A supplements.
  • Use fresh fruits and vegetables and ensure overall food hygiene.
  • Give plenty of fluids along with ORS and Zinc in case of diarrhea.

Common Symptoms of Diarrhea

Dr. Chawla also outlined key symptoms to watch for in children:

  • Not breastfeeding
  • Frequent loose stools leading to dehydration
  • Blood in stool
  • Fever or chills
  • Pale hands and soles
  • Vomiting everything
  • High fever
  • Rapid or labored breathing
  • Lethargy or unconsciousness

In case any of these signs appear, immediate medical attention should be sought.
