Farmer in Cheeka Consumes Poison Over Agent Harassment, Family Demands Justice

Cheeka, Guhla โ€“ June 17 โ€“ A farmer from the Guhla-Cheeka area allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison after being repeatedly harassed by a commission agent over a financial dispute. The incident has triggered local concern, with the farmerโ€™s family demanding strict legal action and threatening to approach the court if justice is not served.

The farmer, identified as Jaskaran, was rushed in critical condition to a private hospital in Cheeka by local villagers. After initial treatment, his condition was reported to be under control.

Allegations Against the Commission Agent

According to Jaskaran, he had mortgaged his land to the commission agent in exchange for a loan. He claimed that not only did he give land worth โ‚น5 lakh more than the actual loan amount, but the agent also failed to honor the written agreement. Despite a mutual settlement, the agent allegedly reneged on the deal, pushing the farmer into deep distress.

Jaskaran stated, โ€œI gave more land than required to clear the loan, but the agent neither returned the โ‚น5 lakh nor respected the terms. I had no option left but to take this extreme step.โ€

Sister Accuses Agent of Exploiting Illiteracy

The farmerโ€™s sister, Varinder Kaur, added that the agent had been troubling her brother for a long time and took advantage of his illiteracy. She said that despite returning the loan in cash after every harvest, the agent manipulated the records.

She alleged, โ€œMy brother returned the money in full after each crop season. The payment came into our bank account, and we handed the cash over to the agent. He exploited my brotherโ€™s illiteracy and inflated a โ‚น6 lakh loan into โ‚น16 lakh.โ€

Kaur demanded a thorough investigation and immediate action, urging authorities to put the agent behind bars to prevent further exploitation of uneducated farmers.

Police Begins Investigation

Guhla Police Station in-charge confirmed that the matter is under investigation by the Mehmoodpur Chowki in-charge. He assured that detailed inquiry will be conducted and appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings.

The case has drawn attention to the financial vulnerabilities of small and illiterate farmers, with community voices now urging the administration to ensure fairness, transparency, and legal accountability in land and loan dealings.
