Ghaggar River Level Drops Between Sihali and Tatiana

Guhla-Cheeka (August 7):
The water level of the Ghaggar River, flowing between Sihali and Tatiana villages, has started receding, providing much-needed relief to local farmers. For the past few days, the rising river had sparked fears of potential flooding in the region.

Rising Water Revived Memories of Past Floods

Farmers Baljeet Singh, Nishan Singh, Gurtej Singh, Babal Paprala, and Gurmeet Singh expressed their concerns, stating that the river’s increasing level reminded them of the devastating floods of the past. During previous flood events, crops, fodder, and even homes were severely affected, leading to major losses.

Four Dam Gates Closed, Flow Slows Down

The farmers shared that while six floodgates had been opened earlier, four of them have now been shut, which has significantly reduced the flow of water. This change has resulted in a gradual drop in the riverโ€™s water level since last night.

Temporary Dam in Punjab Helped Protect Fields

In an effort to protect their crops, farmers reportedly built a temporary barrier in Julahkhedi village of Patiala district (Punjab), near the Haryana border. The effort proved largely successful, as it prevented water from entering agricultural lands.

No Heavy Rain Forecast in Hills, Further Drop Expected

If no heavy rainfall occurs in the hilly regions over the next couple of days, experts and local farmers expect the river level to decrease even further. For now, the declining water level has brought a sense of calm to the farming communities of the Cheeka region.
