Awareness Camp on Senior Citizens Act in Bhagal Village
Guhla-Cheeka, August 8:
An awareness camp was organized in Bhagal village to educate the elderly and residents about the rights and legal protections available under the Senior Citizens Act. The event focused on ensuring dignity, care, and support for senior citizens in the community.
Legal Protection is a Right, Not Just a Duty
Panel advocate Jeevan Singh Nain addressed the gathering and emphasized that caring for elderly parents is not only a moral responsibility but also a legal obligation. He explained that under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, elderly individuals can file a case in the SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) court if their children or caretakers neglect them.
90-Day Timeframe for Court Decisions
Advocate Nain further informed that the SDM court is required to resolve such cases within 90 days. If the accused fails to respond, the court can pass an ex-parte decision (in favor of the complainant).
The elderly may receive up to โน10,000 per month as maintenance, and if the order is disobeyed, the accused may face up to one month in jail.
Property Transfer Can Be Cancelled
He added that if an elderly person transfers their property or land to their children and they later fail to provide care, the court can cancel the property transfer, especially if it’s proven that the act involved deceit or fraud.
Local administration has also been instructed to protect the life, liberty, and property of senior citizens.
Additional Government Benefits for Seniors
The government provides pension schemes for individuals above 60 years of age under social security programs.
Hospitals and government offices are legally obligated to give priority services to senior citizens.
Voices of the Elderly: โProsperity Came, Peace Leftโ
Several elderly participants shared their life experiences. They noted that in the past, even though resources were fewer, life was filled with peace, mutual respect, and contentment. Today, despite material wealth, the rise of nuclear families and a decline in moral values have led to emotional distress and loneliness among seniors.
