Beware of Fake Facebook Video Call Scam

Kaithal Police issues advisory to prevent cyber frauds

Rising Cyber Fraud through Fake Social Media Profiles

Kaithal, October 4 โ€” Kaithal Police has issued a public advisory warning people against new tactics being used by cybercriminals on social media platforms like Facebook and Messenger. These fraudsters are creating fake profiles with attractive names and pictures to trap people into online scams.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Upasana explained that in todayโ€™s digital era, nearly everyone uses smartphones and computers, making them potential targets for cybercrime. Hackers and online scammers constantly invent new methods to cheat people through Facebook, Instagram, and other social platforms.

How Cybercriminals Trap Victims

According to SP Upasana, hackers often create fake profiles using beautiful female pictures and send friend requests to unsuspecting users. Once accepted, they start chatting and gradually convince victims to download specific video chat applications.

After several conversations, they persuade victims to engage in video calls, which are often turned into nude or inappropriate chats. During such calls, the cybercriminal pretends to be a woman while recording or taking screenshots of the session.

The Blackmail Game Begins

Once the video or screenshot is captured, the criminals threaten to upload it on adult websites, YouTube, or send it to friends and family unless money is paid. Out of fear and embarrassment, many victims end up paying, falling prey to blackmail and extortion.

SP Upasana advised that by being alert and cautious online, such incidents can be prevented. People must understand that cyber safety begins with awareness.

Important Safety Measures

  1. Lock Your Profile: Always keep your social media profile locked and set strict privacy settings.
  2. Avoid Unknown Calls: Never accept video calls from unknown numbers. If you do, cover your front camera first.
  3. Report Uploaded Videos: If your video is uploaded online, report it immediately to the platform (like YouTube) for removal.
  4. Donโ€™t Share Personal Info: Never share your phone number, address, or personal details with strangers online.
  5. Report Cybercrime: In case of fraud, file a complaint at your nearest police stationโ€™s Cyber Desk or through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: www.cybercrime.gov.in.

SPโ€™s Final Message

SP Upasana concluded that โ€œin the digital age, a little awareness can prevent major fraud. Avoid unknown calls, stay alert, and donโ€™t panic if targeted. Report immediately instead of giving in to blackmail.โ€

She reminded citizens that cyber safety is everyoneโ€™s responsibility, and being vigilant online is the best defense against fraud and blackmail.
