Drug Addiction More Dangerous Than Cancer, Says Advocate Jeevan Singh Nain

Guhla-Cheeka:
If a disease is identified in time, it can be cured, but drug addiction is an evil that slowly destroys an individual’s entire life. Today, drug abuse has become more dangerous than cancer in both the country and the state. To eradicate it from its roots, every section of society must come forward unitedly. These views were expressed by Advocate Jeevan Singh Nain during an anti-drug awareness programme organized at DAV College, Cheeka, under the campaign run by the Legal Services Committee, Guhla.

Haryana’s Youth Known for Discipline and Strength

Advocate Nain said that Haryana has long been known as the land of “milk and curd,” symbolizing a healthy lifestyle. Due to good nutrition and discipline, the youth of Haryana have set examples not only at the state level but across the country. Haryana players have dominated sports such as wrestling, and even in the recently concluded Olympic Games, athletes from the state won a significant number of medals, bringing pride to Haryana.

Conspiracy to Weaken the Youth Through Drugs

Expressing concern, Advocate Nain said that certain anti-national elements want to weaken this strength of the youth. By spreading the web of drug addiction, they trap innocent youngsters and push their future into darkness. He stressed that intellectuals, public representatives, social workers, teachers, and students must collectively take responsibility in this fight against drugs.

How Youth Fall Into the Trap of Addiction

He explained that drug traffickers first lure young people with small temptations and gradually make them addicted. Once trapped, youths lose the ability to differentiate between right and wrong, moral and immoral, and often drift towards crime. Referring to a recently published news report, Advocate Nain cited a shocking incident where a youth killed his own mother merely because she stopped him from consuming drugs, calling it an extremely tragic and horrifying situation.

Strict Law Against Drug Trafficking

Advocate Nain emphasized that consuming and trafficking narcotic substances is a serious criminal offence, with provisions for heavy fines and strict punishment. He informed that the DSP Guhla has been appointed as the nodal officer in this regard. Any individual involved in drug trafficking can be reported, and such criminals can be sent behind bars with public cooperation.

Drug Addiction Destroys Life Completely

He further stated that drug addiction not only harms physical health but also completely breaks a person mentally, socially, and economically. In many cases, an addict reaches a point of no return. Therefore, it is crucial to identify early signs of addiction and analyze the circumstances that push youth toward drugs. Factors such as poverty, family problems, and greed for money are often exploited by drug peddlers to draw youths into this illegal trade. He described drug trafficking as an offence worse than anti-national activities.

Information on Free Legal Aid Shared

During the programme, Advocate Nain also provided information about free legal aid. He explained that the Indian Constitution grants equal rights to men, women, and transgender persons under Fundamental Rights, and discrimination on the basis of gender is prohibited. In case of violation of fundamental rights, one can directly approach the High Court. Any eligible person can apply on any working day and avail free legal services from panel lawyers without paying any fee.

Collective Pledge for a Drug-Free Society

Teachers, students, and members of the Legal Services Committee were present during the programme. All participants pledged to work together towards building a drug-free society.
